雨 means ‘rain or rainy’ and 天 means ‘day’. So, 雨 + 天 = rainy day. Very straightforward, isn’t it! Besides 雨天, the phrase ‘下雨天’ (xia4 yu3 tian1) can also mean ‘rainy day’. So, when Chinese people ask if you like rainy days or not, they may say:

1. 你喜歡雨天嗎?(ni3 xi3 huan1 yu3 tian1 ma?)
2. 你喜歡下雨天嗎? (ni3 xi3 huan1 xia4 yu3 tian1 ma?)

So, 你喜歡雨天嗎? 為什麼? (In simplified: 你喜欢雨天吗?为什么?)

P.S. What is ‘為什麼’? Anyone know?

Pinyin: yu3 tian1
